Sazkabet, and knowing when it's time

Sazka is famous for lottery tickets. Fewer people outside the Czech Republic know it also runs a sportsbook. Here's how Sazkabet works, how its apps fit together, and the time and money limits Czech rules build into every account.

Sazkabet is licensed in the Czech Republic only and isn't available to bettors in the UK.

01What Sazkabet is

Sazkabet is the fixed-odds sports betting arm of Sazka a.s., the Prague-based lottery company that is part of the Allwyn group, the same group that runs the UK National Lottery. In Czech it's called kurzové sázení, odds betting, as opposed to the number games Sazka is best known for.

It entered a market long dominated by established Czech bookmakers, and its main lever has been the size of Sazka's retail network plus a push on price: the company announced it would scrap the handling fee on fixed-odds bets both online and in branches, something Czech bettors had long treated as normal.

02What you get with Sazkabet

Live betting

In-play markets alongside pre-match, with the option to combine both on a single ticket.

Streams

Live streams for selected events inside the app, so you can follow the match you're betting on.

Notifications

Alerts for odds changes and settled tickets, which helps you avoid staring at the screen.

03One brand, several apps

A common point of confusion: Sazka doesn't put everything into one app. Products are split by purpose, so betting needs its own download.

AppWhat it's for
SazkabetFixed-odds sports betting, live bets and streams
SazkaLottery draws such as Sportka and Eurojackpot, results and tickets
Sazka KlubA companion for betting at retail sales points, with loyalty rewards

All of them sit on the same verified Sazka customer account, so limits you set apply across the board.

04What Czech bettors bet on

Czech betting has its own rhythm. Ice hockey is as important as football, and the domestic Extraliga, the NHL and the Ice Hockey World Championship are among the busiest markets of the year. In football, the Czech top flight and the big European leagues dominate, with tennis, basketball and floorball filling the calendar.

That matters for timing. A hockey game has three periods and fast momentum swings, so live odds move constantly. Many of the impulsive bets people regret are placed in exactly those moments.

05Bet types in plain English

TypeCzech termHow it works
SingleSoloOne selection. Wins or loses on its own result.
AccumulatorAKOSeveral selections multiplied together. Higher payout, but one miss loses the lot.
System betSystémová sázkaMany smaller accumulators from one set of picks, so you can still win with a miss or two.
Live betLive sázkaPlaced during the event at odds that change in real time.

Sazkabet lets you mix pre-match and live selections on one ticket. It's a useful feature, and also one to handle carefully: the more legs a ticket has, the less likely it is to win, however good each pick looks.

06Reading odds without fooling yourself

Czech bookmakers use decimal odds, the same format most of Europe uses. Odds of 2.50 mean a 100 CZK stake returns 250 CZK if it wins, including the stake. To see what the bookmaker thinks, divide 1 by the odds: 1 ÷ 2.50 = 0.40, or a 40% implied chance.

Add up the implied chances for every outcome of a match and you'll get more than 100%. The extra is the bookmaker's margin, and it's why betting is a long-run cost for most people rather than an income. Removing the handling fee, as Sazka announced, reduces one cost; the margin is still there.

Why time matters more than you'd think

Live betting compresses decisions into seconds. Research on gambling harms consistently links fast, continuous products with loss of control. The fix is not willpower in the moment but structure set beforehand: a fixed budget, a fixed session length, and notifications switched to results only.

07Time and money limits, Czech style

This is where the Czech system is stricter than many people expect. Under the Czech gambling act, players have to set limits on their account. Anyone listed in the national Register of Excluded Persons, a list that includes people who self-exclude and those excluded on social grounds, can't open an online gambling account at all.

Limits only work if you pick them before you start. If you're anywhere in the world and about to put a bet on, try a session timer first:

00:30:00

A simple countdown that runs in this tab. When it hits zero, that's your cue to stop.

The checklist we'd keep next to any betting app

  • Decide the stake for the whole day before your first bet, not per bet.
  • Set a session length, and stop when it ends regardless of the score.
  • Turn off "nearly won" thinking: a lost acca is lost.
  • Never chase. Doubling up after a loss is how budgets disappear.
  • Take a full day off each week. If that feels hard, it's worth talking to someone.

The best time to set a limit is before the first kick-off. The second best time is now.

08Warning signs worth taking seriously

Problem gambling rarely starts with one big loss. It usually shows up as small changes in how betting fits into your day. If several of these sound familiar, it's time to step back and talk to someone:

  • You bet for longer than you planned, more often than not.
  • You place a new bet straight after a loss to "get it back".
  • You check scores or odds during work, meals or time with family.
  • You've borrowed money, or used money meant for bills, to bet.
  • You feel irritable when you try to cut down.
  • You keep betting secret, or downplay how much you spend.

Self-exclusion is not a punishment; it's a tool. In the Czech Republic it works through the Register of Excluded Persons. In Great Britain, GAMSTOP blocks you from every UK-licensed gambling site at once, and blocking software on your phone can add another layer.

A weekly routine that keeps betting in its box

WhenWhat to do
MondaySet the week's budget. Write it down.
Before each sessionStart a timer. Decide the stop point for wins and losses.
After each sessionNote what you spent, not what you "nearly" won.
SundayCompare spend to budget. If it went over, lower next week's limit.

09If you're in the UK

Sazkabet holds a Czech licence and verifies customers against Czech identity records, so UK residents can't register, and using a VPN would breach its terms. If you bet in Great Britain, use a bookmaker licensed by the UK Gambling Commission, which you can check on the Commission's public register. You'll get comparable tools: deposit limits, time-outs, reality checks and GAMSTOP self-exclusion across every UK-licensed site at once.

10Branch or app: two ways to bet with Sazka

At a Sazka sales pointIn the Sazkabet app
Placing a betAt the terminal, with the Sazka Klub app as a helperOn the verified online account
Live bettingLimited by how long you stand at the counterFull in-play markets and streams
Handling feeSazka announced the end of the fee on fixed-odds bets in both channels
Built-in frictionHigh: you have to go somewhereLow: always in your pocket

That last row is the honest one. Convenience is the app's selling point and also its main risk. A shop has opening hours; a phone doesn't. If you mostly bet online, give yourself some of the friction a branch gives you for free: no betting after a set time in the evening, and the app kept off your home screen.

12Five minutes before kick-off

A practical routine, whichever bookmaker you use and wherever you live. It takes less time than reading the team news.

  • Check your balance against your weekly budget. If this bet would take you over, don't place it.
  • Decide on the bet before opening the app. Browsing markets is how one planned single becomes a five-leg accumulator.
  • Set the timer. Ninety minutes of football is a natural session, so stop when the final whistle goes.
  • Turn off live odds alerts for the match. You'll still see the result.
  • Know your exit. If you lose the stake, that was the cost of the evening's entertainment.
